Appliance Test & Tag

What is appliance safety testing?

Testing and tagging is the process of inspecting, testing, tagging and recording of electrical equipment to ensure compliance with
AS/NZS 3760:2003 In Service Safety Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment.

Tests include the following

Earth bond continuity tests - Makes sure the appliance is earthed so that if there is a fault it will ground the electricity so that you won't be electrocuted.

Insulation resistance test - Tests the resistance between the active and neutral and any exposed metal parts on the appliance to check if the outside casing is live.

Power up test - This test shows the current being lost though leakage as the difference in the currents flowing in the live and neutral conductors while the appliance is powered and running

Visual inspection - Checks for visual faults such as damaged casing, exposed wires, loose cords, and loose pins.

Under current OH&S legislation, it is a requirement that all businesses MUST provide and maintain a safe working environment that is without risk to health. The AS3760:2003 standard provides that Electrical Equipment, appliances, leads, etc. are certified Tested and Tagged for safety compliance.

Insurance policies require you to fulfil all legal requirements to remain covered.

A failure to comply with OH&S legislation provides an opportunity for your insurance company to refuse a claim should you have a fire or workplace injury.

In some states in Australia it is mandatory to test and tag all electrical appliances.

The Workplaces that Require Testing

These include:

  • Farms
  • Retail Shops

Do I need to test and tag?

Electrical testing and tagging involves big businesses, medium businesses, small businesses and the self employed, even if its just a one person show running from home.
The specific guidelines are available from the Australian Standards website - www.standards.org.au

What if I have new items?

When a new electrical appliance is purchased a staff member
can apply a "New to Service" (NTS) tag, available from us.

NTS tags are simply the best way to confirm the status of new appliances or leads at a site as "newly" installed. The benefit of asset owners attaching an NTS tag to new items at the time of introduction are:

Users can be assured that the "new" status of an installed item is guaranteed and cannot be confused with an untagged item.

The individual responsible for testing and tagging items at the site would be certain that the item is new to service and was not omitted from a previous round of tests.

The individual responsible for testing and tagging items has all newly introduced items conveniently tagged with an appliance number, which speeds up the test procedure.

Trained Technician

MB Radio Electronics test technician is trained to thoroughly inspect and test all electrical appliances in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation and the Australian Standard AS/NZS 3760:2003

Certified Technician

We hold a current certificate that authorises us to test and tag "plug in" electrical equipment to AS/NZS 3760:2003 requirements.

RCD Testing

RCD (Residual Current Device)
Also Called -ELCB (Earth Leakage Circuit-Breaker) CBR (Core Balance Relay) GFI (Ground Fault Interrupt)

An RCD is an electronic sensor that measures the flow of current between the active and neutral conductors on an appliance. If an appliance is faulty or if the RCD detects that the electrical current flows incorrectly to earth, the electricity supply will be cut off. An RCD is designed to assist in preventing electrocution by detecting this leakage in current flow and stops power being supplied.

A Residual Current Device (RCD), also known as a Safety Switch is a device located in the distribution boards of some sites. Just like your Portable Appliances, Occupational Health & Safety Act 2000 and Occupational Health & Safety Regulation 2001 requires that you test your RCDs to ensure that they are working correctly.
As part of our testing procedure, we shall test your RCDs and perform data capture to the Australian Standard 3760:2003.

We will perform a "push button", millisecond and milliamp trigger test to ensure that these devices are functioning within appropriate standards. The information from these tests shall be recorded and reported to you along with your appliance testing and tagging information.

These devices are designed to save lives, if you have gone to the effort to have these live saving devices installed in your workplace it only makes sense to ensure they work!

Tagging and Log Books

We will supply the appropriate coloured test tag per tested appliance and complete the necessary entry in your “Appliance Test Log Book”.

If you do not have a Log Book, we can provide one for a cost.

Failed Appliances

If an appliance fails any tests it must be removed from service immediately and will be tagged as such. If it cannot be removed due to size or situation, appropriate warning signage will be applied indicating the appliance is unsafe to operate.

Appliance Tester

We have the latest Appliance Tester ( Wavecom TNT+ ) which is certified and calibrated. Calibration Certificate will be shown on

Reports and Certificates

All data collected, including location and test results, will be reported in your Appliance Log Book. It is required under the AS/NZS 3760 Standard to be kept on the site where the appliances are used.

Ownership of the data (legal responsibility) is that of the clients and must be retained for seven (7) years.

Security and Privacy

We follow strict security and privacy guidelines with regard to your workplace and the offices within and strictly adhere to the Privacy Information Act 2003.
